Struck from more than one pair of dies, this medal was the official coronation issue. The obverse of the medal features a George III laureate bust, armoured and draped, whilst its reverse displays George II seated on Edward III’s throne, holding the orb and sceptre as Britannia crowns the monarch. Specifically designed to indicate a peaceful succession, the crowning of a second Hanoverian British monarch indicated the growing solidity of the new Royal House in Britain.
","TagMessage":null,"StockSummary":{"Status":2,"TotalAvailable":0.0,"StatusMessage":"Request Stock Update","AdditionalStatusMessage":null,"PurchaseAvailableQuantity":0.0,"BackorderAvailableQuantity":0.0,"PreorderAvailableQuantity":0.0,"StockDegradationAvailableQuantity":0.0,"ItemReference":"11808__CatalogContent","IsTracked":true,"SourcedToOrder":false,"CanPreorder":false,"CanBackorder":false,"MaxQuantity":10.000000000,"MinQuantity":1.000000000,"CanAddToBasket":false,"NotAvailableForEwbis":false,"ShippingMessage":null,"LimitedEditionPresentation":0,"AvailableFromMessage":null,"HideStockMessagePart":false,"LimitedStockMessage":null,"LimitedStockMessageColor":null,"ShowDepartmentInformation":false},"Quality":null,"PureMetalType":"Silver","Standard":null,"StandardClass":null,"TaxIconList":null,"AnalyticsOriginalPrice":{"Amount":1495.000000000,"Currency":"GBP"},"AnalyticsDiscountedPrice":{"Amount":1495.000000000,"Currency":"GBP"},"Price":1495.000000000,"ReleaseDate":"0001-01-01T00:00:00","AnalyticsDigitalDataModel":null,"PriceMoney":{"Amount":0.0,"Currency":""}},{"AltImageUrl":"","TeaserDto":null,"SubDisplayName":"Extremely Fine+ Condition","ContentLink":"11807__CatalogContent","Title":"HISEVII902","Denomination":null,"RelatedVariants":[],"RelatedProducts":[],"Withdrawn":false,"Discontinued":false,"InCompare":false,"ImageDisplaySizes":{"1200":700,"992":700,"768":700,"0":450},"IsAgeRestricted":false,"AgeRestrictedMessage":"You need to be 18 to purchase this product","IsPersonalised":false,"CanBePersonalised":false,"CanBePersonalisedMessage":"","IsPreciousMetalsVariant":false,"IsSignatureOnlyVariant":false,"MinimumPurchaseFormatted":null,"SignatureLandingPageUrl":null,"StoppedTrading":false,"DisableFeefo":true,"VariantSchema":{"Title":"1902 Edward VII Coronation Spithead Medal ","Code":"HISEVII902","Price":"£145.00","Brand":"","Quantity":"0","StockStatus":"AwaitingStock","PromoCode":null,"Position":"18","CanAddToBasket":"False","Category":"Medals"},"Badge":null,"IsStockDegradation":false,"IsCountryRestricted":false,"Code":"HISEVII902","DisplayName":"1902 Edward VII Coronation Spithead Medal ","DefaultImageUrl":"/globalassets/consumer/_campaigns/2023/hlumelo-misc/historics/medals/hisev11902-1902-king-edward-vii-queen-alexandra-medal-obverse-1500x1500-f3a2c67.jpg","CurrencyCode":"GBP","PriceString":"£145.00","OriginalPriceString":"£145.00","EntryReference":"11807__CatalogContent","EntryUrl":"/shop/medals/hisevii902/","DenominationDisplayName":"","YearOfIssue":0,"YearOfWidthdrawal":0,"ObverseDesigner":null,"Description":"
Albert Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, acceded to the British throne in 1901. It is depicted as a globe, with lines of longitude and latitude - concepts understood since antiquity. Lake Victoria is represented, a lake dedicated to the Empress in 1858 by the explorer Speke but actually first recorded in a twelfth century map by Muhammad al-Idrisi. Also note Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela first charted by Alonso de Ojeda and the eponymous Amerigo Vespucci, at the end of the fifteenth century. North America is notably amorphous and peripheral, indistinct from the arctic, perhaps reflecting how little commercial and cultural impact it had on Europe, other than northern fishing routes, at that time. Antarctica by contrast is drawn much larger than it is in reality and spreads east to the Indian Ocean. As the Dutch East India Company had noted land at Cape York Peninsula in 1605, it is tempting to suggest that this oversized Antarctica may include a rough and contemporary interpretation of Australia, to be charted properly in the centuries to follow.
\n
The Roettier brothers from Holland had come to prominence as engravers during the exile of Charles II in the Parliamentarian period, and were held in such favour by Charles that he promised them positions in his Mint at the Restoration.
